More cantelopes, fewer watermelons

September 9, 2006

Behold the state of the yard right after the corn harvest.

The watermelons weren’t doing well anyway, but my satisfaction with them has dropped even lower now that almost all of them have either split or had holes drilled in their bottoms.

Lovely. The others have developed black areas where they are appearing to slowly rot. This is happening on their sides, not their bottoms. The one remaining intact melon is on a plant where all the leaves died. I haven’t figured out what is causing any of these problems.

The cantelopes are doing o.k. though. Compare these with the earlier photo.
2 cantelopes
A third cantelope is now the champion at a little over 3 inches in diameter. Not bad for melons started from seed in July.

The cantelopes are being protected from evil creatures that might want to drill into them and from wet ground by wood planks underneath.

Fred doesn’t care about any of this.
